What to Know Before Hiring a Web Designer

Hiring a web designer is not just about making your website look pretty. It’s about designing a site that works for your business. If you’re starting from the ground up or need to rebrand, the right designer can spare you time, money, and a lot of aggravation. Here’s what you should know before you take the plunge.

1. Clarity Over Aesthetics

A great designer doesn’t just need to know what your site needs to look like. They need to know what you need it to do. Are you trying to schedule more calls? Sell products? Establish trust? Be specific about what you’re aiming for so your designer can design with purpose.

2. Know Your Must-Haves

Prior to calling them, jot down a few non-negotiables. Maybe it’s a blog, an e-commerce site, a booking system, or just a mobile-responsive design that won’t infuriate your visitors. Having them written down in advance works in your favour by enabling your designer to scope the work and quote properly.

3. Designers Aren’t Always Developers

Some web designers do everything: design, build, SEO, launch. Others do largely layout and appearance. Ask what’s included. If you need backend functionality, integrations, or e-commerce, make sure your designer has that skill set or a team they collaborate with.

4. Ask About Platforms

WordPress, Webflow, Squarespace, Wix — all have their pros and cons. The “best” one is relative to your budget, comfort level, and long-term requirements. A good designer will present your options and assist in selecting what works for you.

5. You Will Still Need Content

Design is just one piece of the puzzle. You’ll also need some images, some text, and perhaps a logo as well. Some designers (including me) can do those things or help you determine them. Just remember that they don’t just magically appear out of thin air.

6. It’s a Collaboration

You don’t need to be a font and spacing fanatic, but you do need to be involved. Your most successful result will come from explaining your vision, giving constructive feedback, and trusting your designer’s process. Final Tip: Ask Questions A good designer will not make you feel uneasy for asking how something is done. This is your business. I’m only here to help you bring it to life online.
